Medicinal plants-Information, Identification of Raw Herbal Drugs, Cultivation :

Identification of Herbal Drugs:
From the earliest days of civilization, mankind has turned to plants for healing, a tradition that has survived the advent of modern medicine. Even today, 80% of the world’s population relies on traditional medicine. About 70% of the healthcare needs of India is being catered by traditional systems of medicine including Ayurveda, which highly depend on the natural resources. It is estimated that the world has about 250,000 plants to which India’a contribution is about 50,000 plants of all groups including about 20,000 flowering plants and conifers. It is estimated that out of these, 7,000 plants are used in the Traditional Systems of Medicine and according to a recent survey it is reported that 1,700 plants are used in Ayurvedic system of medicine. However, the number of vegetable drugs actually used by various Ayurvedic practitioners in India and available in different drug markets in India is between 500-700 only. The herbal drugs sold in the markets in India go by different vernacular or regional or trade names which vary from region to region, thanks to the multi-lingual character of our Country. Though the original names of the Ayurvedic drugs as given in the classical literature are in Sanskrit, in the trade they are known in the regional or vernacular names like Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, etc. The plethora of languages prevailing in India has contributed to considerable confusion in the botanical identity of the drug. A few examples are Brahmi, Rasnapatti, Jivanti-which refer to more than one plant. (Viswanathan et al, Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge, vol. 2, no. 2, April,2003). Therefore, it has become imperative to ascertain the correct identity of raw herbal drugs before the manufacture of end-drugs.
